CCD array - A silicon chip connected to electronic circuitry containing tightly-packed sensors known as charge-coupled devices (CCDs). In a digital camera or scanner, a lens focuses an image on the array, and each sensor converts light falling on it from one small part of the scene into an electronic impulse. The image is thus digitized, leaving the image quality depending largely on the number of CCDs in the array.
